Hawaii is one of the world’s most desired vacation destinations, but it’s also unique on Earth in many other ways.  Here’s a bit of trivia you may find interesting.

The Hawaiian Island chain stretches over 1,500 miles and is the most isolated population center in the world; one of many things that is unique about this paradise.

At 1,523 miles, the Hawaiian archipelago is the longest island chain in the world and it’s also the most isolated population center, being about 2,400 miles from the nearest land mass.  Hawaii has its own time zone, which is two hours behind the West Coast of mainland U.S.  Even with its remote location, Hawaii has the most advanced telecommunications system with 100 percent digital switching for telephones.

Formed by underwater volcanoes some 70 million years in the making, the Hawaiian Islands are unlike any other destination on Earth. Here is a sunrise at Haleakala on Maui, which is the largest dormant volcano.

The islands were formed by volcanoes some 70 million years ago.  The youngest is the “Big Island” of Hawaii, which is home to Kilauea, the world’s most active and largest volcano.  And, measured from the ocean floor, Hawaii’s Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain (and volcano) on the planet at 33,476 feet, over 4,000 feet higher than Mt. Everest.  It’s no wonder the biggest telescopes anywhere are located here. Maui’s Haleakala Crater is the largest dormant volcano.

Hawaii harvests more macadamia nuts and orchids than any country.  Oahu boasts the world’s largest wind generator, which is a windmill located atop a 20-story tower with twin blades measuring some 400 feet each.  Mt. Waialeale on Kauai is the wettest spot on Earth with average annual rainfall of some 450 inches. Molokai’s north shore claims the highest sea cliffs at more than 3,000 feet above the ocean.

Of the more than 7,000 marine species located in the Islands, some 25 percent are found nowhere else in the world.  One such animal is the Hawaiian monk seal, which has been designated as the state’s official mammal.

The islands of Hawaii are fascinating in many ways, with a rich cultural history, unsurpassed beauty, tropical weather, pristine beaches, and scores of things that are unique to this paradise. Visitors will enjoy almost limitless activities and sites not seen anywhere else on Earth.  The Hawaiian Islands are truly one of a kind.
