Dressing for Your Hawaii Trip

If there is one word that describes Hawaii, it’s laid-back.  The casual, comfortable lifestyle extends everywhere in the Islands for locals and visitors alike. So, when planning for your trip to America’s paradise, here are some things to keep in mind about clothing to take along.

First, Hawaii is a warm climate, averaging 85 degrees in the summer and 75 in winter months.  Evening temperatures generally drop about 10 degrees.  This adds up to a packing list of light clothing for daylight hours and, maybe, a cover-up or jacket at night. Because you will probably experience some humidity during your stay, light fabrics, especially cotton, hold up best.

The Islands are tropical and you may see occasional rain, especially, in winter, but there’s no need for umbrellas or rain gear.  If you get caught in a downpour, the warm climes will dry you out in no time.

Basically, whatever you would normally wear on your weekend on the mainland works in Hawaii.  Shorts, sandals, tee shirts and other attire are quite acceptable, especially venturing around the Islands or beaching it.  And that goes for the kids, too.

Colorful Aloha attire is worn throughout the Islands and for virtually every occasion. Designs that feature tropical themes are worn by locals and visitors alike.

Colorful Aloha attire is prevalent throughout the Islands and is suitable for virtually every occasion and any place you may visit here. Untucked Hawaiian shirts are appropriate for men and women, often stressing tropical colors.

While the Hawaiian shirts are a mainstay here, stay away from the designs that feature corporate logos, sports figures, playing cards or other non-tropical subjects. Look for more traditional patterns like palm trees, flowers, and fish. That’s what the locals do.

For the ladies, softer colors and designs are the norm. The traditional dress is the muumuu that gently hangs from the shoulders and drapes around the body.  You can go just about anywhere in the islands, any time of day in a muumuu. They are great swim suit cover-ups, as well.

When the sun goes down and you want to go out to a nice restaurant, slacks and an Aloha shirt for men and floral print muumuu for women are very appropriate.

Many visitors pack light, anticipating some purchases of island attire upon arrival in Hawaii. Just remember that when coming to the Islands, comfort is king.
